I don't feel at all qualified to speak on behalf of people living with disability even though I have shared in the lives of many people over the years and I have a son with Down Syndrome. Certainly, my association with other families who have children with Downs and spending time with dear friends with disabilities has enriched my perspective, but I don't want to stand in a public space on this issue principally because people living with disabilities can and do speak well for themselves. It is they who we should be listening to.

In a recent blog I discussed the illusion of choice in respect to the tragic death of Texan, Bowers' was not a euthanasia death but the circumstances in which he had to make a 'choice' about the withdrawal of his medical care which lead to his death point starkly to the reality that sometimes there's really no choice at all - that options do not exist (either in reality or by perception) that would make any 'choice to die' both rational and well considered with full information about alternatives.Tim Bowers.
