Coroner names Exit International after suicide death of 47 year old woman The same evening as the Australian Medical Board announces the suspension of Philip Nitschke's medical licence, another story - this time from the UK - casts a long, dark shadow over the clandestine death industry.The woman, Gillian Clarke, was found dead in her home in April. The finding was that she died of asphyxiation. She had also consumed a 'potentially lethal dose of a sedative' said the Telegraph and Argus report.

It's a numbers game

We reported recently that Dr Nitschke, director of Exit International has been given 48 hours within which to convince the Medical Board of Australia that it should not suspend his medical practice certificate. Originally we understood that there were up to half-a-dozen complaints against the behaviour of Dr Nitschke before the Medical Board. We now understand that the number could actually be double that amount.Nitschke gave an interview to Vice Media concerning the public furore over the death of a 45 year old man who was in email contact with Nitschke before his death. Complaints from the AMA in Western Australia and from the suicide prevention organisation, Beyond Blue seem to hinge upon the claim that Nitschke had a duty fo care to this man to urge him to seek help. He did not.

The idea that suicide can be somehow rational cannot change our total opposition to suicide. By Paul Russell: Bouquets to Jeff Kennett and the Beyond Blue organisation for their clear and appropriate condemnation of the actions, or rather inactions, of Dr Philip Nitschke in relation to the suicide death of a Perth man in the story that ran on the ABC's 7:30 report a little over a week ago.

Australian Suicide Prevention Organisation confirms medical board complaint against Nitschke

This article in today's Herald Sun, by Beyond Blue chairman, The Hon Jeff Kennett AC confirms that a complaint will be made by that organisation to the Australian Medical Board. This follows confirmation yesterday that the West Australian Branch of the Australian Medical Association will do likewise. Earlier, The Black Dog Institute suggested that they may also make a complaint, but this has not been confirmed. In all, that makes five or possibly six complaints to the medical board int he last two years including one from HOPE.Life is the greatest gift we're given
